Many parents understand how important a good night’s sleep on quality mattress brands is for their child. When a child goes to bed at a decent hour in a decent bed they tend to be much happier throughout their day, perform better at school and are less likely to catch illness or accidentally hurt themselves. Who wouldn’t want that for their kid? The challenge comes when children have a difficult time accepting their bedtimes and going to sleep when they are told. (They haven’t quite figured out how good sleep actually is for them yet.) Since this is the case for many a child, here are a few easy tricks to help you get your kids to go to bed when you want them to.
1. Create an Appealing Atmosphere in their Bedroom

First things first, you want to make sure your child’s room is both emotionally and physically likeable. Keep the room at a pleasing temperature and decorate the room with toys, bedspread, pictures, etc. that help your child feel safe and happy. Make sure that their pajamas, pillows, sheets and blankets are comfy and breathable.
2. Plan Ahead of Time

Have a game plan in your head that you are willing to stick to every night for a successful bedtime. Start out by serving dinner a couple hours before your child goes to bed so that they are not struggling to sleep on a super full stomach. Likewise, make sure they don’t go too long after dinner before going to bed, otherwise they will be too hungry to sleep. Avoid having your child eat sweets and caffeine before bed as well or they might end up bouncing on the walls for hours. Another way you can plan and prepare your child for bedtime is by giving them little warnings as their bedtime looms nearer. For example, you could remind them an hour before bedtime that they need to think about getting ready for bed soon. Giving advance notice to your child about their eminent bedtime allows them to complete whatever it is they may be working on at that moment.
3. Avoid All Media at Bedtime

You’ve pretty much lost the battle when you let your kids play games or watch movies just before bed. Many people of all ages have a hard time tearing themselves away from the screens of iPads, phones, computers and TVs especially at night. Taking away the electronics at the same time every night helps your child understand that it really is getting close to bedtime. Chances are that when your child is not exposed to media right before bed they could fall asleep faster and perhaps sleep more deeply throughout the night.
4. Launch a Regular Nighttime Routine

Associate bedtime with peace and quiet time. Establish an everyday routine where you and your child can do something calm and relaxing such as reading, singing, telling stories, cuddling, turning the lights off, etc. You can even start a routine of quietness right after dinner and play soft music to help set the mood and make everybody sleepy.
Because no two families are alike some of these tricks may work for you and your child while others may crash and burn. Experiment until you come up with the best rules and strategies that best meet your needs. Remember that your child needs for sleep than they think they do and that is why you, as the parent, are there to teach them and guide them. Whatever you end up deciding to do for your child’s bedtime, stick with it to the bitter end. Then when your kids grow up they’ll either thank you for your sacrifices or ask you for help with putting their own kids to bed. Either way, you’ll be considered the master of bedtimes.
