You’ve bought a new home, made it through the stress of moving, and everything is unpacked. Now what? Since bare walls are not fun to stare at, now is time to add the finishing touches that make that house feel more like your home sweet home. While decorating a new place is a daunting task, here are three easy questions to ask to determine what you will be happy with in your home.
1. What colors make me feel most comfortable?
While you may love bright, fun colors on your home decorating Pinterest board, they may not be what you really want your own home to look like. Since painting is a lot of work to do twice (not to mention expensive!), now is the time to step outside of Pinterest and other home decorating websites, and visit model homes or with friends whose style is suited to your tastes. This will give you a feel for how comfortable you are with color, and how it would affect your home.
If the thought of painting is stressful to you, you can do a “practice run” through websites like mycolortopia.com that allow you to upload a picture of your room, pick your colors and see a virtual mock up of what the room will look like when finished. The site also offers advice on how to pick the right color for your project, and the best colors to suit your personality.
2. What design elements do I most love?
Once you have selected the colors you tend to gravitate to most, take a field trip–not to the paint store just yet, but to your local fabric store! Choose a fabric pattern with several colors in it and use this as your design inspiration to carry throughout your home. The fabric will not only serve as your color scheme for painting, but can be used as accent pieces. Think throw pillows, blankets, art, dinner napkins-depending on how creative you feel like being the sky is the limit! The bonus of taking this approach to decorating is that you can see how well the colors interact.
Design does have certain “rules” which should generally be abided by- one of which is sticking to a group of five colors- a white, a neutral and three coordinating colors of your choice. By starting this way, you will be able to tie in your color scheme throughout the whole home.
3. What’s my Style?
Now that you have selected colors and design elements, it’s time to determine the style you want to achieve. Look through design magazines, blogs and homes stores for inspiration. Find something you love whether it be modern, Victorian, or even a beach house feel. Collect pictures or design inspirations suited to you and carry them throughout your home.
