Three Weird Sleeping Habits: Think You Have Them?
No, weird sleeping habits aren’t caused by cheap mattresses though you’d think they might be. Cheap mattresses just make you uncomfortable. The same is true of bed sizes. As a matter of fact, researchers aren’t quite sure what causes a lot of odd sleeping habits. Here are three of them:
This isn’t just walking around in your sleep. People who sleepwalk have been known to cook meals, scream or talk or even drive. One piece of good news is that if you sleepwalk, you probably won’t remember it. Children are most susceptible to sleepwalking.
Most people who sleepwalk are sleep deprived and might suffer from sleep apnea, where they stop breathing for a second or two as they sleep. If you sleepwalk, the best thing to do is set up a regular sleep routine, and try not to drink alcohol or take medications right before going to bed.
This is where you fall asleep uncontrollably. It doesn’t matter what time of day it is or where you are. You just fall asleep. In this case, researchers know that narcolepsy is caused by a deficiency of hypocretin, which regulates the sleep/wake cycle. Hypocretin is produced in the hypothalamus, which is deep inside of the brain. Medical professionals still aren’t sure why people who have narcolepsy don’t produce this substance.
3. Restless Legs Syndrome
If you have an overwhelming and unpleasant need to move your legs while you’re in bed trying to go to sleep, you probably have restless leg syndrome. Researchers don’t know what causes it, but they do know that it runs in families. Some studies hint that it may be due to iron deficiency.
More and more research is being done into these strange sleeping habits, so the future looks bright if you suffer from any one of them! Either way, getting a new bed might not be a bad idea! (See: http://www.mattress.com/)
