He’s outside playing basketball, listening to the steady beat of the ball bouncing up and down. His heart pumps on the off beat of the basketball, it goes together perfectly. The sun stares at him making water trickle down his forehead. He holds the ball and shoots it. It falls through the net and it makes a “swoosh” sound. His dad claps and gives him a pat on the back. It reminds him of the loud cheers the pro players get after they make a game winning shot. He always wanted to make a crowd erupt into a thunderous applause.
“Dad, can I go inside to play the piano?” He asks.
“Sure, good job out here, son.”
The boy just received the piano for his seventh birthday last week. He runs in the house full of excitement. He still takes the time to notice the beating of his shoes on the pavement. He bursts through the door and sits down at the piano. There’s a piece of paper and a pen on the music stand instead of a beginner’s book. In school he’s used Piano learning Software to accelerate his understanding of the piano music. Instead of reciting other songs in books, he tries to create his own music.
Today his inspiration came from the steady rhythm of the bouncing basketball. He presses down on a “C” note, trying to mimic the beating of the bouncing basketball. He starts to hum, trying to figure out what else he’s going to add to his musical recipe. He adds some chords that mesh well with the constant “C”. It reminds him of his heart beat and the basketball going together like it was natural.
He writes down the notes he’s playing so that he won’t forget. He practices for a few hours and it’s almost perfect, but something is missing. He plays through it again one more time to see what else he can add. At the end, his mom comes in the room and claps as hard as she can. That’s what was missing.
