Bed wetting is a problem for millions of Americans of all ages. About 20% of 5 year olds and 10% of 6 year olds regularly wet their beds. Although it’s primarily an issue for children, the elderly and others also have occasional bouts of bed wetting themselves. It can be inconvenient and embarrassing especially at a business conference. While most youngsters eventually grow out of it, bedwetters over age 30 probably won’t. Fortunately there are a number of things you can do to bring an end to bed wetting not caused by a medical problem like constipation or an infection.
One of the barriers to stopping children and adults from wetting their beds is getting past the common misconceptions about why people wet their beds. Many people believe people wet their beds because they are too lazy to get up and go to the bathroom at night. Another misconception is that people wet their bed out of spite. They want to make their caregiver or loved one clean up after them. While these beliefs may be true in a few rare cases, by and large, they are not.
Bedwetting tends to run in families. Doctors think it may be caused when the maturation of the bladder control is delayed. This is often hereditary.
Bedwetters give birth to bedwetters and usually children who wet their beds stop doing it at the same age their parents did. In some rare cases secondary enuresis caused by psychological stress or trauma may be the cause of the bedwetting and counseling or some other treatment may be necessary to cause the bed wetting to stop.
Bedwetting Cessation Strategies
Solutions to the bedwetting conundrum abound. Here are a few of them.
Limit liquids close to bed time
Medication (not recommended for children younger than 5 years old.)
Ask your pediatrician for suggestions
Use a urinary bed alarm
The urinary bed alarm is the most effective way to stop bed wetting most parents, physicians and care givers agree. The alarm has a small moisture sensor which is attached near the crotch of sleepwear and a small alarm which is attached to the pajama top. As soon as moisture touches the sensor the alarm wakes the bedwetter and off to the bathroom they go. Eventually they learn to hold their water and stop wetting the bed.
Until the bed wetting stops, you may need to use waterproof sheets and padding, plastic sheeting or disposable underwear so they don’t ruin the mattress and void their Sleepys Mattress Warranty. If all else fails, threaten to tell everybody on their job that they are forty years old and they still wet the bed.
