When I decided to get back into shape, I bought into the idea that working out was just that – work. Today, I encourage others not to buy into this belief, that running is too difficult and that the only way to exercise is to dull the senses. It is not fun just to be fit; it is also fun to become fit.
Sometimes the difference between having a terrible workout session and having the best session is in the location. I recommend finding a gym that you love, a sports club that offers a swimming pool, a spa and state of the art equipment. I found the LA sports club called Equinox which was totally for me, and it made all the difference. I actually started to look forward to going to the gym, viewing it as a way to relax. I was amazed at how quickly my view changed.
If you are unsure about working out on your own, I highly recommend a fitness class. As a woman, I was first unsure about whether or not I would feel comfortable at the gym. Instead of going regularly, I took my buddies to a pilates mat class and then a session of yoga. The teachers were easygoing and encouraged me to come back to the gym on my own. Soon, you could hardly get me to leave.
I also had more fun when I began to set goals for myself. If your goal is to lose weight, start with five pound increments rather than trying to look at the big picture. You will feel motivated and inspired to see the daily progress.
I have also found it is helpful to overload my senses when I am working out. Listening to music is a great way to keep up the pace on a long-distance run. Talking on the phone while you stretch can get you in the mood for aerobics. Even watching television on the treadmill can keep you going.
There are so many stories about losing weight and getting toned being boring. While it does require a lot of time and energy to get the body you want, it is well worth it. You can make it fun with a bit of dedication. Visit http://www.equinox.com/clubs/westla/ for more information.
