Spring is in the air which means so are the spring cleaning lists. But before you groan or roll your eyes away from the screen, let’s take a moment to reflect what getting your spring cleaning done early this year could mean? More time to play!!! Yes, I am transporting us back to being children and having life seem so much easier in these days of yesteryear.
With getting your household in a manageable state it will help you relax and enjoy the coming days ahead. Plus it will save you more money in having routine maintenance done. Let’s take a closer look into cleaning the garage which can also mean a glorified storage shed.
Make The Garage Run On Empty
The first thing to get that much needed space and organization back in place is to actually clear everything out of the garage. Yes, this is not a simple task! It can even make you want to cry and start singing out the Beatles “A Hard Day’s Night” But don’t give up hope by taking everything out of the garage, it means you will rediscover lost treasures and be one step closer in accomplishing your goal.
- Make sure to set up designated areas to make the sorting easier as you take your belongings out of the garage. Have a trash pile, tool pile; sporting equipment/bikes etc. it will help you see what you have and the best place to put everything when getting ready to organize things back in a proper place.
Time To Tidy Up
Now That you have a nice clean space….WAIT! I spoke to soon. I am sure if you look around you will see a lot of grime and dirt around where things used to be. Take the time for a deep cleaning. Get the broom out and do your best princess animal call to have some much needed help arrive in droves of mice birds and squirrels. Get out the vacuum and suck up all the dust bunnies, cobwebs and the nasty dead insects on the windowsills and other unsightly places. Use a power washer or hose to spray down all the grime, if you need to have the floors dry in record time try drying them faster by using a broom to push the water out.
Time To Organize
Don’t bring your stuff back in just yet, Now that you have already got an ideas of what you will be keeping and bringing back into the garage it is time to start having a plan of action in place. Start thinking of how you want things organized storage shelves, bike hooks, mud room space for each of the kids, sports equipment drawers, bins, and where to store your tools. Having an area set up for where you want things to go will take a lot of the guesswork out of where things will go.
Put Everything Back In The Right Way
Now that you have cleaned and revamped your garage space, it is time to have things come back in the right way. To do this you need to go trough your things to consolidate what you truly need in your garage. Do you want to bring clutter back into your home? Or are you wanting that clean organized extra square feet of space? The choice is yours. Next sort your items by how often you will use them, such as a crow bar vs. a screwdriver. Which will you use more often? The screwdriver, which means put the screwdriver in an easier access point than the crow bar as you don’t want to be digging through your things just to get to the screwdriver.
You Can Do It
The hardest part about cleaning the garage is trying to focus and stay on task. Not to mention the sheer motivation it takes to get to the point of finally feeling like you can clean it out. If you can stick it out and get the music rolling in the background followed by some ice colds ones in the fridge to keep you going when it gets hot. The best reward of all will be seeing everyone else trying to clean out their garages in the late spring or summer from your window, and all you do is smile because you are inside your nice cool air conditioned house enjoying a game or two on the couch sipping a nice cold one.
