An “Act of God,” is a blanket term for all that nature throws at us. It’s a dramatic phrase for the unavoidable situations where natural forces create a threat that’s out of our control. In short, there’s not a darn thing that can be done about it. The moment will come and go, hopefully quickly, and damage will occur.
It may seem that some force from above has an actual grudge against us at times, targeting individuals with terrible phenomena such as lightning and earthquakes. That’s really not the case at all. We don’t have some kind of cosmic bulls-eye drawing tragedy to us. The truth is, we simply live in an unpredictable world where bad things happen.
Let’s have a look at a few of the common Acts of God, and some of the damage caused.
We see it in the news all the time. A hurricane causes millions of dollars of damage. The winds rip houses from their foundations, and a trail of debris is left behind. Entire communities suffer from the chaos that a hurricane brings. The weather system becomes incredibly distorted, bringing torrential rains, winds, and flooding.
What we see in the aftermath of a hurricane is an example of some of the greatest destructive force that nature is capable of. People feel helpless as they lose everything. Their home and street can quite literally be washed away.
We’d like to believe that the ground we walk upon is a stable, solid substance, but when talking about seismically active areas, the earth can indeed become a destructive force.
While there may be a hurricane season, and an inkling of building winds, there’s often no predicting an earthquake. Many institutes exist across the world for just the purpose of studying and predicting this terribly destructive phenomenon, but it’s a force that still denies prediction.
The energy released by a high magnitude earthquake destroys buildings and roads. It indiscriminately levels the most advanced building designs to rubble in moments, causing loss of life and property.
Quite different from many natural forces, a lightning strike occurs in the blink of an eye, surgically destroying property in a very small area. This really can feel like being struck by a belligerent force from above, as a sole home is struck by millions of volts of electricity, and burns.
