The day following Thanksgiving is universally acknowledged as “Black Friday. “It’s the one day of the year when more people shop than any other.People go up at the crack of dawn, or even camp out the night before, to be among the first to get their hands on a discounted version of the trendiest products of the year. But when did this craziness start, and why?Well, in 1924, on Thanksgiving Day, November 27 in New York City, R.H. Macy & Co. hosted a lavish Christmas parade. The procession had bands, floats, animals, and Santa Claus, and over 250,000 people turned out to see it.Since 1927, when the parade officially became known as the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, it has signalled the start of the Christmas shopping season. How come the day following Thanksgiving is known as “Black Friday,” though? The name “Black Friday” originated in the 1960s with police officers in Philadelphia who, faced with an unprecedented influx of traffic and customers, came up with the phrase.
That’s why everyone started calling the day following Thanksgiving “Black Friday.”
